Uptick in Fraudulent Emails from Scammers Impersonating Squarespace
Lately I have gotten multiple emails from scammers pretending to be Squarespace.
At first glance it looks like an email from Squarespace, but look closely. Usually the logo is a bit off, maybe stretched incorrectly or slightly different than the emails you usually get from Squarespace. But be careful, sometimes they look pretty darn close to a legitimate email from Squarespace. And I believe they will only get better at looking more and more real.
Unsure if the Email is Legit?
Two of the emails I got recently both said that my payment failed. I know my card on file on my site is correct so I was immediately skeptical. But you might not be aware of your card on file or confused about why you are getting this email.
Most importantly, if you get an email and you are unsure if it’s legit, don’t click on anything! That is what scammers want you to do and that is how they can steal your information.
The best thing you can do first is check the sender. Hover over the sender. The photos included here show that when you hover over the sender, you can see the address where the email came from. Usually it’s a bit strange and is not one the emails Squarespace uses. They have random domain names that wouldn’t make sense coming from a company like Squarespace or even Squarespace could be misspelled. Usually Squarespace uses emails such as no-reply@squarespace.com or noreply@mail.squarespace.com or customercare@squarespace.com but all emails that come from Squarespace would have squarespace.com somewhere in the address. Take a look at the third screenshot included here, it even says is from SquareSpace Billing which is a red flag. Squarespace does not capitalize Space in it’s brand name. Making sure you look closely at these things can help you spot a fraudulent email.
Another thing to look for is something that gives you a specific time deadline, one of the emails I got was 48 hours. Squarespace wouldn’t put an arbitrary amount of time to update your payment details. Usually they send an email with the subject line “Your website subscription is about to renew” if your payment details aren’t up to date they will let you know in this type of email.

When in doubt, login to your Squarespace website and check your billing details directly through your account. It’s best not to click on any email links if you aren’t sure.
